Frugal Flu Prevention

Flu Season is almost upon us.  Below you will find a few simple ways to prevent or lessen the chances of "catching the flu".

Sleep:

Getting a good night’s rest is important for keeping the immune system in top shape.

Adults need anywhere between 6-10 straight hours of sleep per night and children need anywhere between 9-12 hours of sleep per night.

Sleep and rest allow the body to focus its energies on healing and white blood cell production.

Diet:

A well balanced diet stocked with vitamins is key for keeping the immune system in top shape.

Drinking plenty of water flushes your system, washing out the toxins as it rehydrates you.

Hygiene:

Wash your hands frequently and when possible use a scrub brush to clean your nails.

Germs hang out under the nails and look for an opportunity to infect your body through a rub of an eye, the nose or the mouth.

Carry hand wipes with you and use them when you use public transportation, washrooms and public phones among other things.

Use mouthwash a few times per day to kill germs in your mouth.

Go Outside:

A regular dose of fresh air is important, especially in cold weather when central heating dries you out and makes your body more vulnerable to cold and flu viruses. The sun is a great source of vitamin D.

Frugal Fanatic Tip:

If you are a commuter on public transportation or walking along busy streets, clothing can act as a first line of defense against getting the flu. Wear gloves which may keep the germs off your hands and wear a scarf around your mouth to prevent air borne bugs or nail biting, which is another good way to catch the flu.
