The Winning Baby Food Recipe of September 2009
Congratulations to Mommy Sue! Her recipe for Easy Peasy Turkey Squeezy is the winning recipe for September 2009. We love this idea just for the texture and mesy exploration factor; which is why Sue's little one (10 months old) loves it too!
Easy Peasy Turkey Squeezy
1 cup of cooked peas with a wee bit of butter in them
1 cup of ground turkey, all cooked with basil, oregano, garlic and pepper
1/2 cup white mashed potatoes
Take all of the ingredients, mix them together loosely and then plop into a bowl for your baby. I created this when we were having these ingredients for dinner. My little girl Betsy loves this because she can make a mess and knows I won't get bothered by it. This meal is just for mess-making!
The Winning Baby Food Recipe of August 2009
Congratulations to Mommy Karla! Her recipe for Sweet Pumpkin Chicken is the winning recipe for August 2009.
While chicken is good for you, it's pretty bland so we love this recipe to bring some yum to chicken. We recommend this for babies age 8 months and older.
Karla's Sweet Pumpkin Chicken
1 cup cooked chicken breast. Be sure to dice the chicken into small pieces
1/2 cup mashed sweet potatoes and 1/2 cup pumpkin puree. I use canned because it's easier
Put the chicken bits in a blender and then give it a whizz. You want it to be more like little shreds and not like a powder. Once chicken is blended, add it to the sweet potatoes and pumpkin. Put all of this into an oven at 350F. You just want to warm this and allow the flavors to get into the chicken. I keep it in for about 20 minutes and give it a stir when its cooking. That's it! You can give this a dash of allspice or apple pie spice for more flavor.
The Winning Baby Food Recipe of July 2009
Congratulations to Mommy Janine! Her recipe for Apples & Carrots a'la mode is the winning recipe for July 2009.
We chose this recipe because we love the tate of apples mixed with carrots and the addition of yogurt makes a nice twist. We recommend this for babies age 8 months and older and we think this is perfect for those enjoying texture and lumps & bumps. You could also puree this to make a nice dipping sauce!
Janines Apples & Carrots a'la mode
2 Macintosh apples - peeled, cored and diced
3 medium carrots - peeled and diced
1/4 cup plain yogurt
Add the apples and carrots to a saucepan and simmer on low until soft and tender. Check on the water and don't let it cook out!
Once apples and carrots are cooked, transfer them to a large bowl and mash. Allow to cool slightly then spoon out a pportion for your baby. Drizzle in yogurt, as much as you please.
The Winning Baby Food Recipe of June 2009
Congratulations to Mommy Elizabeth! Her recipe for zucchini pancakes is the winning recipe for June 2009.
We chose this recipe because zucchini is a great summer veggie! We also like it because it's a great finger food. Elizabeth rcommends this for babies age 8 months and older and we think this is perfect for those enjoying texture and lumps & bumps.
Elizabeth's Zucchini Pancakes
Ingredients:
1 grated zucchini (or summer squash)
1/2 clove grated garlic
1 tbsp. grated onion
2 tbsp. whole wheat flour
1 egg yolk
1 tsp. olive oil
Prep and Cook: Put all zucchini in a clean kitchen towel and squeeze all liquid out. Put in medium mixing bowl. Add garlic, onion, egg, and flour and mix with clean hands to combine.
In small skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
Remove golf-ball size ball of batter. Pack into a pancake and put in skillet. Cook about 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown on both sides.
Tips and Age: This is great slathered with a bit of ricotta cheese! My son (9 months) loves these little pancakes as finger food, and I love them too! We started these at about 8 months and DS can't get enough of them!
The Winning Baby Food Recipe of May 2009
Congratulations to Mommy Eva. Her recipe for banana semolina is the winning recipe for May 2009.
We liked this recipe because it has a nice hint of sweet and savory to it. Eva rcommends this for those 12 months and older, probably due to the raisins however, if you puree this, your 8 month old+ might enjoy this as well.
Eva's Banana Semolina
Ingredients:
3 Tb Spoon - Fine Semolina
6 to 7 - Golden seedless Raisins
1 tsp - Light brown sugar
30 ml - Milk
100 ml - Water
1 small Banana - cut into small pieces
pinch of cinnamon powder or cardamom powder
Tsp - Butter
Prep and cook: First fry the semolina in a pan and keep aside. Heat the butter , put the raisins. When the raisins are puffed a bit add the water and milk. Add sugar and pinch of cinnanmon powder or cardamom powder. Let the mixture boil, now add the cut banana pieces. Now add fried semolina slowly into the water , continue stirring ( see that lumps are not formed). close the lid and cook for few minutes on a slow fire , till it reaching pudding consistency.
Tips and Age: Babies from 12 months onwards
You can add vanila , If your baby likes apricots you can add them. Preferably dried apricots which are soaked over night , Discard the seed.
The Winning Baby Food Recipe of April 2009
Congratulations to Mommy Amanda. Her recipe for yummy, tasty chicken is the winning recipe for March 2009.
We liked this recipe because it takes plain 'ole chicken and really gives it a fresh taste. This recipe would be suitable for those who have already begun meats.
Ingredients:
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 chicken breast (boneless, skinless)
1 cup pumpkin (cut in cubes)
1/2 cup chicken broth
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp ginger
Prep and cook:
Heat olive oil over medium heat in a skillet. Dice chicken and add to skillet. Cook for about 5 minutes (until browned a little).
Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil. Turn the heat down and simmer, covered, until chicken is completely cooked and pumpkin is very tender. I normally simmer for about 20 minutes. Put it all in the blender and puree.
TIps from Amanda: If your baby hasn't had spices yet, you could omit them. I think the spices really make this recipe though and so does my little angel.
The Winning Baby Food Recipe of March 2009
Congratulations to Mommy Gigi. Her recipe, Liam's Favorite Rice Pudding, is the winning recipe for March 2009.
We liked this recipe due its creamy fruity flavor combinations. This rice pudding can be a treat or it can be a meal for little ones.
Liam's Favorite Rice Pudding
Ingredients:
Two medium pears (skinless/cored/sliced)
one large cooking apple (skinless/cored/sliced)
1 medium banana
one - one 1/2 cup(s) cooked brown rice
3 T plain yogurt
cinnamon to taste
apple juice (100% juice) to desired consistency
Prep and cook:
Bake apples and pears in 350 degree oven for 15-20 minutes or until very soft. Cook brown rice as directed (can be done in advance)
Place cooked apples, pears, bananas in food processor; pulse
Add in rice, yogurt; pulse
Add in apple juice (and/or liquid from baked apples and pears) to desired consistency Dash in cinnamon (to taste) while continuing to pulse
TIps from Gigi: For creamier, add more yogurt. For more/less texture increase/decrease rice amount.
I offered this to my little man, Liam, and he was wild for it. Hope other's like it too.
The Winning Baby Food Recipe of February 2009
Congratulations to Mommy Amanda. Her recipe, Yogurt Chicken with Mango (for younger babies) is the winning recipe for February 2009.
We liked this recipe due to the wonderful flavor combinations; this makes chicken taste more yummy than ususal.
Yogurt Chicken with Mango
Ingredients:
-1 or 2 chicken cubes made from boneless, skinless chicken thighs
-2-3 tbsp. full fat plain yogurt
-3 squares of pre-cut, frozen mango (Dole brand)
Prep and cook:
-cook chicken thighs with preferred method. I use a micro cooker/steamer
-put chicken in food processor and process until a finer shread. Add a little water to keep chicken from drying out (especially if it is still hot while processing)
-spoon chicken into ice cube trays and freeze for for everyday use
Putting the Recipe Together:
**To make recipe, thaw 1 or 2 chicken cubes in microwave, make sure chicken is hot (my microwave is usually 45 secs).
**Thaw mango for about 15 seconds, squish mango to suit baby's preference
** Spoon yogurt over chicken and stir. Add more or less to suit baby's taste.
**Add mango chunks to chicken mixture and happy eating
--Make sure chicken has cooled enough before feeding to baby
Amanda's Tips:
This is what I do for my 6.5 month old who has been eating solids for 2 months now. We mix all sorts of things and this she really liked (my husband thinks my concoctions are gross but my daughter loves them.) This recipe can be easily tweaked to suit any baby's texture preferences.
The yogurt allows the mix to be as runny as you like. Some babies do not take well to cooked, shredded chicken so the yogurt sort of eases them into that texture. This may sound gross but my baby loves it. I imagine you could also try this with apricots or peaches....may have to see how that works ourselves.
