Storing Homemade Baby Food – Don’t toss those unused breast milk bags out!

Mommy Dianne just sent us an email about using breast milk storage bags for homemade baby food. She noted the following:

I wanted to share one tip with you I found. I had a bunch of the Lansinoh breast milk storage bags left over from when I was breast feeding. I use them to store my food cubes in the freezer. They are freezer safe, have 2 ziplock strips, and have a great tab to write date and food type on. Each one holds 6-7 cubes.

They are expensive, so I wouldn’t recommend to buy them just for this, I regular ziplock bag would work fine with a label, but since they were left over and going to waste, they work great.

We wrote back to let Dianne know that we had received 3 emails within the past 3 days about breast milk storage bags doing double duty for freezing homemade baby foods! How funny is that?!?!  These emails inspired this post.

On our Freezing Homemade Baby Food (near the bottom) page, we write about a tip received from a Mom who used breast milk bags. This Mom froze her purees in extra breast milk storage bags and she said it worked great. She even used the storage tray. We loved this idea as breast milk storage bags are sterile and have never contained BPA. But, as Diane notes, these bags are expensive and we really wouldn’t recommend buying them just for homemade baby food.

How to Make Organic Homemade Baby Food

We continue to receive a lot of email asking us how to make organic homemade baby food. There seems to be a certain mystique that continues to surround organic cooking. The recent organic trend has seen a lot of media hype that leads you to believe you must do something special to make organic foods of any kind! There’s no secret to cooking organic homemade baby food. You make organic baby food the same way you make “conventional” homemade baby food except for one difference – you buy and use organic foods.

Yep, that’s it! The only thing you need to do differently to make organic homemade baby food, is to buy organic ingredients :-) You use the same cooking and storing methods and the same appliances and tools too. You can believe the hype that organic foods are healthier but don’t buy into the hype that it’s mysterious or that you must buy an Organic cookbook to prepare organic foods!

Storing Homemade Baby Food – A new product frm Australia!

We’ve stumbled upon these nifty trays for storing homemade baby food!  Qubies for Homemade Baby Food & more! The Qubies site describes these nifty containers as:

Qubies is an upside down ice cube container specifically designed to store and freeze baby puree into convenient meal sized cubes (30ml). But don’t be fooled. It’s extremely savvy and unique in both design and concept.

What’s different?  The secret lies in the clever patented design.  Instead of dividers being inside the container, Qubies has reversed the traditional design and now has the dividers on the lid!

These nifty trays are the creation of Mom Alexandra.  She created these because “Freezing and storing the baby food I’d cooked for my son became a ‘red rag to a bull’.  Why? Well, I tried a number of different methods including ice cube trays and various shaped containers to find that none were really suitable.  I broke lots of containers trying to remove the frozen cubes and they often weren’t the right meal portion either. I didn’t need the stress when I was trying to enjoy the experience of introducing solids to my baby boy. Out of frustration came creative inspiration and Qubies was born.”

At this time, Qubies is only available in Australia but the company will ship internationally!  Our Australian visitors may find them at retail outlets in Wester Australia and Victoria.  Check out the Qubies Homepage  to learn more about this Mom-Invented product!
