Homemade Baby Cereal – Do Grains Really Need to be Ground?

One of the very best ways to make homemade baby cereals is to grind the grains before you cook them.  Grinding the grains will leave you with a powdery-type substance.  This powder will cook into a thin consistency.

If you do not want to grind grains for homemade baby cereal, you can cook the grains and then puree them. The only issue with pureeing cooked grains is that they may become pasty. Rice that is pureed is a grain that most often tends to become pasty. If you will be pureeing cooked grains, do it slowly and add liquid slowly. Be sure to keep a close watch as you are pureeing so that you don’t wind up with a paste.

Asparagus – Steaming Asparagus for Baby Food

If you have had trouble steaming asparagus for your baby ( or even for yourself), we suggest steaming it in a frying pan. Kim wanted to know if there was a way to steam asparagus so that it is uniformly tender. She says steaming asparagus in a steamer basket in a pot has not been too successful.

To steam asparagus in a pan, simply lay the asparagus down across the pan and add a bit of water (see image below). You want to add enough so that the asparagus is almost covered but don’t drown it! Cover the pan and bring to a boil then turn the heat down so that you get a gentle simmer going. Check the water level frequently and add more as needed. We find this typically takes 20-30 minutes until the asparagus is nice and tender. Visit our Asparagus Baby Food Recipes page to learnmore about asparagus for your baby.
