Plain Whole Milk Yogurt with Fruit Purees Mixed In – Why Can’t I Give My Baby Flavored Yogurts?

[ 6 ] July 8, 2009 |

Another email to share with you all today. This one was written to ask why we suggest giving baby plain whole milk yogurt and then adding your own fruit purees to it. We do this for a few reasons:

  • Flavored yogurts are seldom made with whole milk and baby should have whole milk yogurt and not low fat or no fat (skim) yogurt.
  • Flavored yogurts often have an abundance of sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup and gelatins, starches and other icky things!
  • The sugar content (naturally occurring sugar) is far lower in whole milk yogurt than it is is a flavored yogurt. Even YoBaby has some added sugar to it.

Starting baby with a plain whole milk yogurt, with added natural fruits, will have him/her become accustomed to the natural sweetness and flavor of yogurt. Building a taste for natural sweetness will be a great thing for the future health of your child.

One day, when your baby is 7 (as my twins now are) and your neighbor offers them some “go-gurt” or “trix” yogurt, your little one might just say “Ick, this is way to sweet!” :)

  1. Hello, I live in Brooklyn, NY and I have an 8 month old son (Joshua) and we recently started giving him organic peach Yobaby yogurts and he loves them! After reading this article and an excerpt from Dr. Sears’s Nutrition book I realize that I should have started him on the plain yogurt and add my own peaches. The only issue is that I cannot seam to find any plain yogurt for babies in the grocery store? Any suggestions?

  2. All you need to do is look for plain whole milk yogurt. “Baby” yogurt is really nothing more than whole milk yogurt. :-) Stoneyfield Farms, Brown Cow, Cascadia, Nancy’s Organic, Butterworks Farm, and a few others should be available in your area. I also believe Whole Foods has it’s own brand of plain whole milk yogurt too.

  3. I was giving my baby vanilla Stoneyfield Farms yogurt thinking it was also better than the other flavored stuff. It probably has sweeteners in it too, even though it is organic and all, right!? I’m just assuming. And I can’t believe I never thought to add fruit into the plain. Hopefully she’s not too used to the vanilla to switch over now! Thanks for the advice!

  5. I have looked around at the stores near me as I want to introduce yogurt to my daughter. One thing that has puzzled me though is that many yogurts that say whole milk on them only have 3.75% milk fat and contain non fat milk powder as an ingredient. Are these true whole milk yogurts? Are they safe for infants?
