what inspired wholesomebabyfood.com to come to life

Wholesomebabyfood.com was born with one goal in mind; to inspire parents to feed their babies real foods.

When the site was first created in 2003, I set out to simply share my own recipes and my experiences with feeding my own babies homemade foods. It soon became apparent that this wasn't enough for the visitors the site began receiving as many wanted to know things like "what's so bad about giving my baby broccoli as a very first food?".

I decided to expand the information and take an "evidence based" approach to many of the sections, using my knowledge of nutrition, contacts with pediatricians (my own practices a bit more "holistic" and "crunchy" and was so supportive and helpful) and dietitians and of course research skills honed over the years. I feel it important to ensure that the site always refers back to policies, studies and publications from medical or other scientific journals and so links or bibliographic information is always provided. While I am not a pediatrician, it is important to note that even if I were, I would continue to urge you to speak with your own personal pediatrician. You may have read throughout the site that "generalities may not apply because all babies are different".

This website is certified by Health On the Net Foundation. Click to verify.

In 2008 Wholesome Baby Food received the HON stamp of approval. The HON Foundation is a Non-Governmental Organization, internationally known for its pioneering work in the field of health information ethics. It is a non-profit, non-governmental organization, accredited to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

I decided to apply for this certification so that the site would have a respected and non-biased third party review. As you might imagine, I was thrilled when the certification was received. Over the years the site has received recommendations and praise from many pediatricians, nutritionists and dietitians around the US and other countries. The information within the website is utilized by many professionals and plays a part in the WIC nutrition program.

The goal of this website is to inspire parents to make their own baby food.  I want parents to know that they can easily feed their babies healthier, fresher and more tasty foods than those found in jars. Afterall, who knows your baby better, you or the baby food companies? Exactly!

Another goal of this site to help parents disengage from the myth that commercial baby foods are superior and somehow magical. Those commerical baby food companies don't do anything particularly magical with the food they pack into tiny jars. In fact, they cook and process the heck out of those foods, so much so that the foods do not retain their once magnificent splendor. Once parents realize they can make their baby's foods in a more economical and healthful manner, then (I hope) they will become less reliant on overly-processed, pre-packaged foods as their children grow.  Starting healthy eating habits begins with those first tastes of solid foods. Shaping a baby's palate and tastebuds with the flavors, smells & textures of fresh cooked foods will surley put our children on the road to healthier food choices, good nutritional standing and better health overall that will likely last a lifetime.

Our History and Humble Beginnings

These <surprise.> twin boy bundles of joy were the inspiration for this website. I'm Maggie, Editor and Owner of wholesomebabyfood.com. I'm not a professional chef and I have never attended culinary school but I know my way around the kitchen, know how to handle a blender, steamer basket and know how improvise whenever needed. All of my boys were raised on all Homemade Baby Food; after informally studying nutrition for years, I knew homemade was best and believed it was important to instill a love of non-processed, fresh foods into my children. My children's love of healthy wholesome food, and a willingness to try almost any new food, stems from the fact that making their baby food has allowed them a wider variety of tastes and textures.

I have proudly and successfully fledged an older son who is off to university. I informally studied nutrition and criminal justice while in college and entered the legal field focusing on technology.  With the birth of my first child, I once again focused on nutrition and raised my son on homemade baby food.  At the time, many proclaimed me to be a “hippie” and wondered about this “homemade baby food stuff”.

With the arrival of my twin boys, I took the opportunity to leave the corporate world and stay at home with my twins.  Once again, people questioned my “earthy-crunchy” behavior as I focused on nutrition and began to “spread the word” about the benefits of homemade baby food.  A local Moms group had asked me to do a presentation on how to make homemade baby food and I developed a presentation to place on the web for all to review.

Due to the persistent requests of all who viewed and reviewed it; this presentation would grow to be WholesomeBabyFood.com. Thanks to all who poked, prodded and pushed for the publishing. Taking pediatric and nutrition advice, medical recommendations and my own knowledge of making baby food, WholesomeBabyFood.com was born in 2003.

With information from a variety of resources such as the AAP, the CDC, the WHO and consulting dieticians, nutritionists and physicians, I believe we have put together a comprehensive site that will have you on your baby food making way in no time at all.

Making your own baby food is really one of the most wonderful things you can do for your baby. It takes less time than you would imagine and is easy as 1-2-3.
