Tanner's Squash Experience
Tanner's Votes

""MOM, THIS IS NO RICE CEREAL.YUK....

This is a picture of my son Tanner at 6 months trying his first solid food of butternut squash. What funny faces he gave us. With each bite he would pretty much gag and push half of the squash out of his mouth. He would then turn and give us a look of disgust.

I baked my squash in a little bit of water for about 45 min and then pureed with my food processor."

Congratulations little Tanner. We hope that you are now enjoying your squash. Squash really is one of the tastiest veggies around.

What we were looking for in this contest:

It's happened to all of us, we start to feed our babies new foods and we are met with displeasure, hostility, and often confusion. Many babies look at parents as if to say "Why are you feeding me this? Are you trying to poison me or something? The Dog wouldn't even eat this.". They then proceed to scrunch up their faces, maybe cry, spit out the food and firmly clamp their mouths shut, "You're not putting anymore of THAT into MY mouth." So you try the food again at another time an VOILA. - Your baby loves it.

This month's contest was all about the images of your babies and their displeasure with a new food.

Oh no - not pear!

Maia's Votes

I think I like peaches in my yogurt

Peaches Votes

"Maia Olivia is 7 months old, and this was our first dabble in homemade pear sauce. I slightly steamed the pears to soften them, then I threw them in the processor, added a tiny squirt of lemon to help preserve the color and froze them. This was Maia's second fruit tasting. She LOVES bananas so we thought we'd try some pears, but boy oh boy they sure don't taste like nanas..

She squinched up her face and made a growly sound to tell us how different it tasted. After mixing a tad of banana with the pear, it was happily gulped down. She now enjoys pears as much as her nanas but still likes to make a growly noise when she eats them."

"We are feeding our 8 month old girl homemade yogurt with peaches. She likes the yogurt but isn't sure of the peaches. This picture is after several spoons - she couldn't open her mouth wider."

Allison Votes

"It was when we were first starting solids, so it was rice cereal. She didn't know how to say she'd had enough, so she'd just spit out the last mouthful. Now she'll eat absolutely anything. I keep trying to find food that she doesn't like, but to no avail.."

"Allison's first taste of food was my homemade rice cereal. As you can seen from the picture it went over pretty well. She latched on to the spoon and would not let go. She ate the rice for the first week and then we moved on to the sweet potatoes. After that it was rice who?"

Mal's Votes

"Jackson had something with texture for the first time. It was so funny because he literally yelled at me each time he had a bite. It was homemade wholegrain noodles that had been chopped into bits and added to an all natural homemade sauce that I make to add to his meat dinners. I guess it was too soon for him to experience texture?.?

About a month later, we tried again & he slurped down every bite without screaming at me once."

"Mal was sick and hadn't eaten solid food for a couple of days.

This is him getting reacquainted with homemade organic apples and pears with rice cereal."

Joseph's Votes

Mmm Squash!

Tanner's Votes

"This picture was of my then 4 1/2 month old Joseph during his first meal. It was just some bland rice cereal mixed with breast milk. He pretty much made that face for every single meal I've introduced yet after the initial reaction he continued to eat everything.

When I say everything, I mean everything. He has yet to turn down any food and loves to eat."

Avocado - Yuck!

Benjamin's Votes

leela

Leela's Votes

"The Avocado Experience.

Benjamin, my healthy bouncing baby boy LOVES his vegetables... However, when it came time for fruit, that was a different story. We thought we would try the avocado as one of his "first" fruits. Let's just say, it wasn't a big hit for EATING but certainly a big hit for PLAYING. To this day, he still won't eat it. Yuck."

"This is my darling little Leela. She is quite a funny girl when it comes time to eating anything. Any meal is always an extremely serious time for her...It takes a lot to get even the smallest smile out of her when there is food around. In this picture, I believe she didn't want any more to drink out of her 'sippy' cup. I think she was trying to say

"NO MORE MUMMY, GET THAT OUTTA MY FACE.. "
